Item Description
An elite band of knights comes home from years of fighting the king's foreign wars and finds the kingdom rotting under dark magic, with their own king planning to turn them against the people they protect. Their attempt to assassinate him fails, and the survivors become fugitives hunted by the army they once served. That is the setup of Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, a hack-and-slash action RPG that Sony Online Entertainment brought to the PlayStation 3 as part of the console's 2006 launch lineup.
You pick one of three heroes: a heavy-hitting warrior, a fireball-slinging mage, or a more balanced fighter in between. Combat is fast and direct, with standard and wide sweeping attacks that chain into combos, occasional slow-motion flourishes when a combo lands, and skill points to spend as you level. Fallen enemies burst into orbs of health, mana and gold, which keeps you wading into the crowd rather than hanging back, and there is a steady stream of weapons and armor to equip along the way. The game supported two-player local co-op and online play, and it was pitched as a showcase for early PS3 physics, from rippling water to flowing cloth.
Critics were lukewarm in 2006, and it is a straightforward dungeon crawler rather than a deep RPG. Its appeal now is as a snapshot of the PS3's first day: Untold Legends had started on the PSP, and Dark Kingdom was Sony Online's bid to bring the series to high definition alongside the new console. For collectors chasing the PS3's launch titles, this early action RPG is a neat piece of that moment.
