Uncharted: Golden Abyss was the game that proved the PlayStation Vita meant business right out of the gate. Developed by SCE Bend Studio under Naughty Dog's supervision, and launching alongside the handheld in Japan in December 2011 and in North America in February 2012, it brought the full Uncharted experience, cinematic gunfights, hand-over-hand climbing, sharp banter and a globe-trotting mystery, to a screen you could slip into a jacket pocket. Anyone who owned a Vita at launch remembers watching those jungles and crumbling ruins render on such a compact device, and critics rated the visuals among the best ever seen on a handheld.
The story follows a younger Nathan Drake, set before the events of Drake's Fortune, through the river basins, temple ruins and karst caverns of Central America. He is caught between his old friend Jason Dante and Marisa Chase, the granddaughter of a vanished archaeologist, while a ruthless warlord named Guerro bankrolls his war with whatever the dig turns up. At the center of it all is the 400-year-old massacre of a Spanish expedition and a secret sect tied to a legendary lost city. Drake's trademark humor keeps things light even as the stakes climb, and John Garvin's script gives the cast plenty of room to spar.
Golden Abyss also put the Vita's hardware to work. Swipes on the touchscreen trace Drake's climbing routes and finish melee attacks, motion controls steady your aim and keep him balanced on a tightrope, and the rear touchpad zooms the camera so he can photograph the ruins around him. Even the puzzles get hands-on, with touch used to reveal clues and adjust old mechanisms, and series music veteran Clint Bajakian scored the expedition. Some reviewers found the mandatory touch moments a little forced, but they give the game a tactile identity no other Uncharted has.
It went on to become the best-selling Vita title in the US, and because it was built as a standalone story, Naughty Dog left it out of The Nathan Drake Collection on PS4. That makes the Vita the only place to play this chapter of Drake's life: a prequel adventure with a premium console feel that shows exactly what Sony's handheld could do when its own studios went all in.
Uncover the dark secret behind the 400-year-old massacre of a Spanish expedition as Nathan Drake tracks the murderous trail of an ancient and secret Spanish sect. Caught in the middle of a rivalry between Jason Dante - his old friend - and Marisa Chase - the granddaughter of an archeologist who has mysteriously vanished without a trace - Nathan Drake delves into the treacherous river basins, undiscovered temple ruins and karst caverns of Central America in search of a legendary lost city, only to find himself pushed to the edge of the Golden Abyss
