Item Description

Umezawa's Jitte has been bending combat around itself since Betrayers of Kamigawa, and it is easy to see why the moment it gets equipped.

For two mana and a two-mana equip, it turns any creature that connects in combat into a stockpile of options. Each time the equipped creature deals combat damage, to a player or to a blocker, the Jitte gets two charge counters, and each counter can be spent at instant speed on one of three modes: +2/+2 for the wielder, -1/-1 to any target creature, or 2 life. Two counters can win a combat on the spot, pick off a pair of 1-toughness creatures or swing a race, and any you don't spend stay on the Jitte for later.

In Commander it is a favorite for equipment and Voltron decks, but it is just as strong on a humble token or evasive flier: every creature it touches becomes a removal engine, with counters banked for a bigger attacker, a dead blocker or a cushion of life whenever you need one.

This is the Secret Lair Drop printing, collector number 1288, illustrated by Randy Vargas, in foil. It comes from the Artist Series: Randy Vargas drop, which handed a run of cards to a single illustrator, and gives this Kamigawa classic a fresh look in a black-bordered frame.
