Ultraman fights on a skyscraper scale, and on the Super Nintendo every battle runs against the clock. Bandai's Ultraman: Towards the Future, released in North America in October 1991 during the console's first months on the market, puts you in the role of Ultraman Great, the hero of the Japanese-Australian series of the same name, as he takes on the monsters spawned by the alien virus Gudis.
The fights are one-on-one and built around tokusatsu logic. Ultraman can punch, kick and grapple, and charge up special attacks, but simply draining a monster's health is not enough. Its life bar keeps recharging, and the bout only ends when you knock it down and land your finishing beam at the right moment. With three-minute rounds, that turns every match into a race to wear the monster down and seal the victory before time runs out. Opponents include Gudis itself, Degola and Majaba, a giant mosquito, and later foes learn ways to dodge the finisher, which forces you to adapt.
It is a demanding game, and reviews were mixed, with most critics singling out its difficulty. There are only a few lives and no continues, so mastering each monster's pattern is the only way forward. That challenge is part of the appeal for players who enjoy old-school games that do not hold your hand.
Its biggest draw is its subject. Ultraman games rarely reached North America, and this one is tied to Towards the Future, an Ultraman series produced in Australia with an English-speaking cast. For tokusatsu fans and collectors of the hero's games, it is a fun, distinctive slice of giant-monster history on the Super Nintendo.
Home console port of the Arcade release. Based on the popular television show from 1967, Ultraman directly follows the story of its source material. Cast in the role of the titular Ultraman, the player must defeat many of the same monsters that appeared in the original series. Taking the appearance of a 1-on-1 fighting game, Ultraman can punch, kick, and grapple his opponent, as well as use a variety of various special moves that must be charged. However, in order to actually defeat his opponent, Ultraman must deplete their continually-recharging life bar, and at that moment hit with his most powerful special attack: the Specium Beam. As the game continues, different enemies may even find ways to avoid this most formidable attack, and Ultraman must adapt... Each stage has a time limit of only three minutes, and there are three lives and no continues.
