Item Description

Few games have looked as much like the comic they adapt as Ultimate Spider-Man. Developed by Treyarch, with a story by Brian Michael Bendis and art direction built around Mark Bagley's work on the Ultimate Marvel series, it plays like an issue come to life. Thick ink outlines, cel-shaded color and cutscenes that break into split panels with sound effects lettered across the screen give every rooftop chase the look of a page pulled straight from the book, and the style has held up far better than the realistic graphics of its era.

Treyarch had made the Spider-Man 2 movie game a year earlier, and its building-anchored web-swinging comes back here, carrying Peter Parker across Manhattan and Queens with a sense of speed and height that still feels great. The twist is that half the game belongs to Venom. Eddie Brock plays like a wrecking ball, bounding across city blocks in huge leaps, lashing out with tendrils and hurling cars, and his hunger keeps draining his health unless he feeds on the people around him. Switching between the agile hero and the brute gives the campaign a rhythm few superhero games have matched.

The story continues the Ultimate universe's Venom saga, with the Beetle stalking Eddie and a gallery of guests and rivals woven through it: Rhino, Electro, the Green Goblin, Carnage, Silver Sable, Wolverine and Mary Jane among them, plus a rooftop race against the Human Torch. Between story chapters, the open city is packed with races, combat tours, collectible tokens and side challenges that reward anyone who likes to swing around and clean up the map.

Ultimate Spider-Man lands in the sweet spot of Spider-Man gaming history, between the movie tie-ins and the modern open-world era, and it is still the game that best captures what it felt like to read the Ultimate books in the 2000s. If you grew up with Bendis and Bagley's run, or just want to see how good a comic-book style can look on the PlayStation 2, this is the one to play.
