Item Description

Calypso's offer never changes: survive his tournament and he will grant you one wish, though rarely the way you pictured it. Twisted Metal: Head-On brought that grim bargain to the PlayStation Portable as part of the system's North American launch in March 2005, and it made an immediate case that Sony's new handheld could carry a full-blooded console franchise. Incognito Entertainment, the studio behind Twisted Metal: Black, built it, and it plays less like a spin-off than a proper series entry that happens to fit in a pocket.

Story mode opens up a garage of fifteen vehicles, and the old favorites are accounted for: Sweet Tooth's ice cream truck with the flaming-headed clown at the wheel, Axel strapped between two enormous wheels, the ghostly Spectre and Mr. Slam's hulking construction rig among them. A run through the tournament spans eight stages and three boss fights, with Los Angeles and Paris returning from Twisted Metal 2 alongside newer ground such as Tokyo. Teleporters hidden in each level lead to timed minigames where you smash taxicabs, leap chasms or take out helicopters with napalm, and clearing them is how you unlock extra drivers and arenas.

Head-On was also the first Twisted Metal to ship with online play built in, and the whole package was designed around multiplayer. Up to six nearby PSPs could link over ad hoc wireless for Deathmatch, Collection, Fox Hunt and Last Man Standing, each with team variants, and hosts could tune weapons, health and relic drops to suit the group. The official servers are long gone, but the feature list shows how much the game leaned on the PSP's built-in wireless from day one, and critics noticed: the PSP original scored noticeably higher than the 2008 PS2 port, Twisted Metal: Head-On Extra Twisted Edition.

Pick it up today and it is fast, loud and refreshingly direct. Matches are short and violent, the frame rate holds steady while the screen fills with fire, and each driver's ending, delivered with the series' trademark cruelty, gives you a reason to run the gauntlet again with someone new behind the wheel. This is the moment Twisted Metal went portable, played on the system it was made for.
