Item Condition

Game + manual: the cartridge and its manual, no box. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Turmoil gives you nowhere to hide. Your ship sits in a vertical shaft running through the middle of the screen, seven horizontal lanes open off it, and enemies pour in from both sides at once. You slide up and down, firing left and right, and the pace barely lets up from the first wave to the last.

Several kinds of alien ship cross the lanes at different speeds, with the quicker ones worth more points, but the real trouble comes from the special enemies. Arrows that make it across the screen turn into tanks, and tanks can only be destroyed from behind, so the lesson comes fast: kill the arrows on their first pass. Every so often a flashing prize appears at the end of a lane, and grabbing it is the only time you leave the shaft. Collect it and an indestructible ghost ship comes down that lane after you; wait too long and the prize turns into a supersonic cannonball, the fastest and most dangerous thing in the game. Clearing every wave moves you up to a faster, more crowded level, and the Select switch lets experienced players start further in.

Turmoil was written by Mark Turmell at Sirius Software and published on the 2600 by Fox Video Games in 1982. Turmell went on to co-create arcade hits such as Smash TV and NBA Jam, and you can already feel his instinct for frantic, crowded screens here. Few 2600 shooters pack this much simultaneous threat onto a single screen.

If you like shooters that reward quick decisions over memorization, this is a fast, addictive 2600 cartridge that rarely gets the attention of the big licensed names, and one that still holds up as pure arcade adrenaline.

About the game

The player controls a space ship which is trapped in an area consisting of seven tunnels which are connected by a vertical shaft. Enemies are attacking the player from left and right and it is the objective of the player to destroy as many attackers as possible using the shaft. You can't, however, hover at one spot for too long since an invincible enemy will appear, forcing the player to change positions eventually.
