What if the open-world crime game put you on the other side of the badge? True Crime: Streets of LA casts you as Nick Kang, a hotheaded detective in the LAPD's Elite Operations Division, investigating a string of Chinatown bombings that may be tied to his father's disappearance twenty years earlier. Developed by Luxoflux and published by Activision, it arrived as one of the most ambitious answers to Grand Theft Auto, built around a recreation of Los Angeles that covers 240 square miles and places more than 100 real landmarks where they actually stand.
The game mixes three styles of action: car chases through the streets, gunfights, and hand-to-hand brawls drawn from martial arts films. Random street crimes pop up as you drive, and how you handle them matters. Arrests, non-lethal shots and stealth knockouts earn Good Cop points, while civilian casualties and excessive force pile up Bad Cop points. Lean too far toward the dark side and civilians turn on Kang, and eventually his fellow officers and SWAT come hunting for him.
The story branches in a way few action games tried at the time. Fail many missions and the plot simply takes a different route rather than ending your run, some chapters open in more than one way, and your cop score helps decide which of the multiple endings you see. The voice cast is loaded: Russell Wong as Kang, Christopher Walken as Sergeant George, Michelle Rodriguez as his partner Rosie Velasco, Gary Oldman, Michael Madsen, CCH Pounder and James Hong. A West Coast hip-hop soundtrack sets the mood, and Snoop Dogg himself is unlockable, with his own mission and car.
Reviewers had real complaints about the camera and the clipping, but the response was strong overall. IGN gave it a 9 out of 10, it won Best Action Game at the 2003 Spike Video Game Awards, and it sold more than three million copies worldwide. Game Informer called it the first game to give Grand Theft Auto a real run for its money. On PlayStation 2, it is a snapshot of the wild era when every publisher wanted its own open city, and a rare one that brought a cop's moral ledger into the mix.
True Crime: Streets of LA is a free-roaming driving and action game similar in concept to Grand Theft Auto III. The game's structure is mission-based; most of the missions are dictated by the story and initiate following a cutscene that advances it. Failing a mission still allows the player to continue playing through the chapter and undertake subsequent missions; in some cases this will lead to branching paths and optional missions. However, in order to complete the whole chapter the player must eventually succeed in all the main missions.
