Item Description

Twenty-five square miles of Manhattan, mapped street by street with most of its real names, landmarks and highways, and you are the cop working it. True Crime: New York City casts you as Marcus Reed, a former gang member turned police officer whose first night in the Organized Crime Unit ends with his mentor and godfather, Terry Higgins, killed in a warehouse explosion. An FBI agent named Gabriel Whitting wants Marcus to root out a mole inside his own unit, while his father, Isaiah "The King" Reed, sits behind bars with a long history in the city's underworld.

The voice cast is stacked: Christopher Walken as Whitting, Laurence Fishburne as Isaiah, Mickey Rourke as Higgins, plus Mariska Hargitay, Esai Morales and Traci Lords. Walken and Lords both took home performance awards at the 2005 Spike Video Game Awards. Redman headlines a soundtrack of more than eighty licensed tracks, from Jay-Z and Fat Joe to the Ramones, recording an original song and turning up as an unlockable character with his own minigame.

On the street, the game is all about choices. Four major cases, the Magdalena Cartel, the Palermo Mob, the Presidents Club and the Shadow Tong, open up once the first is closed, and in between the city keeps throwing random crimes your way. Make arrests and use non-lethal Precision Targeting shots to build good cop points, or shake down shop owners, plant evidence and sell what you seize, at the risk of going rogue and having the whole department turn on you. Ignore a neighborhood and its crime rises until shops close and the streets get meaner. Between cases you can learn new fighting styles at dojos, enter street races and an underground fight club, ride the subway or hail a cab.

It was a rough-edged release, and critics at the time knocked its bugs and frame rate even as they praised how the everyday cop work fed into the investigations. What it offers today is something few games of its era attempted: a sprawling mid-2000s Manhattan where the moral calls are yours and the city reacts to them. The GameCube version, ported by Exakt Entertainment for Activision, puts that ambitious, messy, fascinating sandbox on Nintendo's console, a very different kind of open world from anything else in the library.
