Light Cycles carving glowing walls across a black grid, discs ricocheting around an arena: Tron: Evolution – Battle Grids is built around the games that made the Grid famous. Developed by n-Space for Wii and DS as a tie-in to 2010's Tron: Legacy, it tells its own story set before the film, as a program you design and name fights to become the first ISO champion of the Battle Grid.

Grid Games are the core of the experience. Light Cycle Arena and Light Cycle Races, Disc Arena, Light Runner Arena and Races, Tanks and the sport-like HyperBall are all here, and up to four players can compete locally in any of them. Championship Mode strings four to eight Grid Games into a single tournament, which makes it a natural fit for a game night. On Wii, the Light Cycle and Light Runner modes can be played with the Wii Wheel, and HyperBall supports Wii MotionPlus for advanced shots.

Story Mode ties it together with small hubs full of programs offering jobs and quests that pay out in bits, which you spend customizing your program. Along the way you cross paths with Quorra, Zuse and Tron himself, train under a coach named Calchas and build toward a final Light Cycle duel with the ruthless rival Blaze. You can roam the world on foot, in Light Cycles, in Grid Tanks or aboard a Recognizer.

Reviews were middling, with Metacritic landing in the high 50s, but its focus on local multiplayer sets it apart from the action-heavy HD Tron: Evolution, and n-Space designed it as a separate experience for Nintendo's systems. For a Tron collection, it is the version of the Grid built for four friends and a couch.

About the game

Players create their own programs to battle and defeat enemies in Tron: Evolution - Battle Grids. This version of Tron: Evolution also allows players to move around the world of Tron in Grid Tanks, Light Cycles, Recognizers or on foot for hand-to-hand combat. Story mode includes many games and some small hubs. In each hub there are programs with jobs, or quests that the player can complete for bits (bits can also be found scattered around the hubs). There is a cheat code system for unlocking in-game elements. Up to four players can play at the same time in local multiplayer (there is no online mode).
