Item Description

Optimus Prime speaks with Peter Cullen's voice, Megatron snarls with Frank Welker's, and you get to throw a car across a city block with either one. Transformers: The Game is the 2007 tie-in to Michael Bay's live-action film, developed by Traveller's Tales, and it follows the movie's war over the AllSpark from both sides, with separate Autobot and Decepticon campaigns that cross paths along the way.

The fun is in the destruction. Each area is an open environment where robots can transform into their vehicle forms at will, racing to objectives or chasing down rivals, then switching back to fight with light and heavy weapons, melee attacks and whatever is nearby, from cars to lamp posts that double as swords. The Autobot side puts you in control of Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Jazz and Ironhide, while the Decepticon story hands you Megatron, Starscream, Blackout, Scorponok and Barricade. Side missions, Energon cubes and hidden faction emblems unlock film trailers, production art and alternate color schemes, including Generation 1 looks for Optimus and Megatron that longtime fans will love.

The Wii version has its own control scheme built around the motion controls. You swipe the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to throw punches and hurl objects, and point at the screen to aim your guns, and GameSpot praised how responsive it felt. IGN singled out the Wii version's visuals as some of the best on the system when it launched. Reviews overall were mixed, with complaints about the camera and repetitive missions, but the sheer robot-on-robot mayhem won plenty of players over.

Licensed games from the 2007 film era are a time capsule of their own, and this one earns its place for a simple reason: it lets you play the villains. Running the Decepticon campaign as Megatron and Starscream, tearing apart the same streets the Autobots are trying to protect, is the part players tend to remember, and on Wii the swing-to-punch controls give that destruction a physical feel the other versions do not have.
