Item Description

Most players who remember the Revenge of the Fallen game are thinking of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 release. The PlayStation 2 version is something else entirely. Krome Studios built its own take on Michael Bay's 2009 sequel for the PS2 and Wii, published by Activision, with a different structure, different missions and a completely different idea of what transforming should mean. For a Transformers collector, that alone makes it a curiosity worth owning: a side of the movie-game era that most people never saw.

Instead of separate Autobot and Decepticon campaigns, this version runs a single linear story that switches sides between levels. On the Autobot side you fight as Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ironhide and Jetfire; on the Decepticon side, Megatron, Starscream and Sideways. The campaign loosely follows the film from the chaos of Shanghai to the depths of the Laurentian Abyss and on to Egypt. Combat blends third-person shooting with up-close brawling, and transformation works as a special attack rather than a way to get around: build up Energon by defeating enemies, then spend it to transform and wipe out everything around you. That same Energon doubles as a health top-up, so every fight becomes a small decision about whether to heal or cut loose.

It is worth being honest that reviewers were hard on it, knocking its controls, short campaign and limited transforming. But there is a certain charm to a big-license action game arriving on the PlayStation 2 in 2009, years into the console's long life and well after most studios had moved on, and the chance to play as Jetfire or stomp through levels as Megatron has its own appeal. For a complete PS2 Transformers shelf, or anyone curious about how the movie-era games were rebuilt for older hardware, this is the version that tells that story.

About the game

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a video game adaptation of the film, developed by Krome Studios for the Wii and PlayStation 2. The game shares several developers with the previous Armada-based title, following Krome Studios' acquisition of Melbourne House in 2006. The gameplay and features of this version differ significantly from those in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 releases. The game received generally negative reviews due to its limited transformation mechanics, linear level design, and repetitive gameplay elements.
