Item Description

Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, Frank Welker as Megatron and Soundwave, and a cel-shaded art style lifted straight from the 1984 cartoon: Transformers: Devastation is about as close as games have come to a lost season of Generation 1. PlatinumGames, the studio behind Bayonetta and Vanquish, built it, and the pairing of Saturday-morning nostalgia with Platinum's razor-sharp action design is every bit as good as it sounds. Dan Gilvezan, Gregg Berger and Michael Bell also return as Bumblebee, Grimlock and Sideswipe.

You play as five Autobots: Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Wheeljack and Grimlock, each with a special ability and an Overdrive attack. Fights flow between robot and vehicle mode at any moment, so a combo can roll into a vehicle attack and back again without breaking stride. Dodging at the last instant triggers Focus, slowing time for a counterattack in a way Bayonetta players will recognize immediately. Credits earned in battle pay for upgrades, weapon synthesis and T.E.C.H. passive boosts, and a 50-mission Challenge Mode gives you plenty to sink your teeth into after the seven-chapter story.

Megatron has taken control of the crashed Autobot ship Proudstar and plans to use the Insecticons to turn Earth into a new Cybertron. Starscream, Shockwave, Soundwave, Blitzwing and Thundercracker all show up, and the combiner fights are a G1 fan's dream: the Constructicons merge into the towering Devastator and the Stunticons form Menasor. Andy Schmidt, a former IDW Transformers writer and editor, wrote the story, and Vince DiCola, composer of The Transformers: The Movie, scored it with Kenny Meriedeth.

Critics praised its nostalgia, its looks and its combat, and the most common complaint, that the campaign is short, matters less in a game built for replaying on higher difficulties. It was the last Transformers game Activision released under its Hasbro license and was pulled from digital storefronts in December 2017, so a disc is how it lives on, and on the Xbox 360 it makes a perfect companion to High Moon's Cybertron games from the same console generation.
