Item Description

Peter Cullen's Optimus Prime giving orders, Frank Welker's Megatron sneering back, a city rendered in bold flat colors and thick black outlines: Transformers: Devastation looks and sounds like a lost episode of the 1980s cartoon. PlatinumGames, the studio behind Bayonetta and Vanquish, took the classic Generation 1 designs, cel-shaded them into living animation cels, and built a fast, stylish action game around them. Activision published it in 2015, and it plays exactly like you would hope a Platinum brawler starring the Autobots would.

Five Autobots are playable, Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Wheeljack and Grimlock, and each has a different feel. Combat flows between robot and vehicle forms, so a string of punches can finish with you transforming mid-combo to ram an enemy at full speed, and a perfectly timed dodge triggers a slow-motion window in the spirit of Bayonetta's Witch Time. Grimlock gets to stomp through fights in his dinosaur form, which is every bit as gloriously destructive as it sounds.

The Decepticons turn out in force, with Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave and Blitzwing all spoiling for a fight, and an early showdown against Devastator, the towering combined form of the Constructicons, sets the scale for what follows. The plot, a Decepticon scheme to remake Earth in Cybertron's image, is pure Saturday-morning stuff and gleefully so. Loot drops, weapon crafting and upgrades add an RPG-lite layer, and the higher difficulties reward exactly the kind of mastery Platinum fans love to chase.

It is a short game built for replays rather than padding, with chapter rankings that invite you back to tighten your combos. Activision later pulled it from digital storefronts, which makes a physical disc the straightforward way to play it on PS4 today. No other game captures the look, voices and swagger of the original cartoon this faithfully, and few licensed action games of its era play anywhere near this well.
