Konami's Track & Field II takes the button-pounding sprints of the arcade original and blows them out into a full Olympic program. Built around the 1988 Seoul Games (in Japan it was even called Konamic Sports in Seoul), it packs more than a dozen events onto one NES cartridge, and many of them have nothing to do with running at all.

Fencing and taekwondo play like tiny one-on-one fighting games. Archery and clay pigeon shooting are all about timing and nerve. The hammer throw, triple jump, pole vault and hurdles keep the classic power-and-rhythm feel, while freestyle swimming, canoeing, high diving and the horizontal bar test very different skills. Then there is hang gliding, a delightfully odd inclusion that nobody expected to find in an Olympic game.

Three modes give it range. You can practice events in training, chase medals through the Olympic mode, or turn the cartridge into a living-room competition in Versus mode, which adds an arm wrestling event you can only play head-to-head. That two-player side is what kept it in heavy rotation long after the Seoul Olympics ended, because few NES sports games offered this many different ways to beat a sibling.

It is far deeper than the first NES Track & Field, and Konami's polish shows in the clean sprites and the way the controls change from event to event. Playing it today is a fun reminder of how much a 1988 cartridge could squeeze in, and of an era when an Olympic tie-in meant hang gliding and arm wrestling sat right alongside the hurdles.
