Andy's toys have always had a competitive streak, and Toy Story Racer finally gives them a proper track to settle things. Built for the PlayStation by Traveller's Tales and published by Activision in 2001, it lines up a roster drawn from the first film: Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Bo Peep and RC are ready from the start, while Mr. Potato Head, Slinky Dog, Hamm, Rex, a Little Green Man, the muscle-bound Rocky Gibraltar, Lenny the binoculars and even Sid's mutant toy Babyface wait to be unlocked.

The tracks are the real treat. Races tear through Andy's house, the neighborhood, a shopping mall, Pizza Planet and Sid's house, recreating the movie's settings at toy scale, while dedicated smash arenas set in places like a bowling alley, a cinema and an ice rink turn things into a free-for-all. Item boxes hand out power-ups such as spinning tops, rockets and an electroshock, so no lead is safe for long.

Underneath the friendly presentation sits a surprising amount of game. Beyond straightforward races there is a long list of event types, among them Knockout, Tag, Smash and Survival, plus reversed tracks and more than a hundred challenges to work through, so there is always another character or track to chase. IGN described it as "aimed at young kids, but it's surprisingly adult in the level of detail," which sums it up nicely, and split-screen racing makes it an easy pick for siblings or a parent-and-kid session on the couch.

Traveller's Tales would later become the studio behind the LEGO games, and its knack for turning a big license into a lovingly detailed playground is already on display here. Toy Story Racer is a warm slice of early-2000s Pixar nostalgia on the original PlayStation, and a kart racer that clearly respects the movie it came from.
