Item Description

Three months after the Oni were driven back from Utakata Village, a fresh company of soldiers marches in from the war-torn north, and the danger they bring with them makes the first crisis look like a warm-up. That is the setup for Toukiden: Kiwami, Omega Force's expanded edition of its demon-hunting action RPG. On the PlayStation Vita it is the complete package: the full original campaign, a substantial new story built on top of it, new allies to fight beside and roughly twice as many species of Oni to track down.

The hunting itself is where Toukiden shines. Oni are towering, grotesque creatures drawn from Japanese myth, and the Targeted Destruction System lets you take them apart piece by piece, severing an arm or shattering a horn to cripple an attack and claim the materials locked inside. Kiwami adds three weapons that change how a hunt feels: a rifle loaded with six kinds of ammunition, from explosive rounds to sniper shots; a hulking club built for smashing limbs off; and a naginata whose leaping strikes carry you across the battlefield. When your squad's unity gauge fills, a combined team attack can tear several limbs away in one blow, and offline you can order your companions to attack, defend or cover each other.

Beyond the weapons, Kiwami layers on systems that reward long-term play. Mitama, the spirits of historical heroes, shape your Slayer's skills and fighting style, and the new Tenko, a fox-like companion, scavenges items on the map, revives you when you fall and grows more useful the more you care for it. Emergency missions and an endless horde mode give veterans something to chase long after the credits.

Omega Force made its name on the crowd-clearing chaos of Dynasty Warriors, but Toukiden showed the studio could build something slower and more deliberate, where reading a single enormous enemy matters more than mowing down hundreds. On the Vita that structure is a natural fit: a quick hunt on a lunch break, a long session of crafting and upgrading on the couch. Players carrying a save over from The Age of Demons pick up right where they left off, and newcomers get the whole saga in one cartridge, the definitive way to play the series on Sony's handheld.
