Ten years is a long time to sleep. Toukiden 2 opens with the Awakening, a catastrophe that tears rifts through space and time and flings your Slayer a decade into the future, into a Japan smothered in darkness where long-lost places have resurfaced and Oni hunt humans in swarms. From the new hub of Mahoroba Village, you take up your weapons again and set out to learn how badly the world has changed.
Omega Force, the studio best known for Dynasty Warriors, created Toukiden as Koei Tecmo's answer to the hunting-action genre, and this sequel is its biggest leap. The hunting grounds now form one connected open world that unlocks as the story progresses, threaded with pockets of Miasma, corrupted zones where a gauge ticks toward death until you cut down the demon in the cursed stone. The headline addition is the Demon Hand, a spectral grappling arm powered by the Professor's device. It hooks onto objects and minor demons, and against giant Oni it can stun them, lock onto body parts and rip them away mid-fight. On Vita, the Demon Hand can also be used through the touchscreen.
Depth comes from the Mitama, the souls of figures from Japanese history, freed when you defeat the Oni that consumed them. Each Mitama can learn up to nine Boosts and equip three at a time, powering up your Slayer, weapons, armor and Demon Hand, so every build becomes something you shape over dozens of hunts. Two new weapon types, the sword and shield and the chain-whip, join the series' existing arsenal and give returning players fresh ways to fight.
The game supports four-player co-op hunts and surrounds solo players with AI companions, and critics singled out the open world and the reduced item farming as real improvements to the formula. It is the most ambitious Toukiden, a full-scale monster hunt on the Vita with a story the genre rarely bothers to tell this well.
