Item Description

Very few Xbox 360 games arrived carrying as much history as Too Human. Silicon Knights, the studio behind Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and Eternal Darkness, first pitched the idea in the late 1990s as a PlayStation project, carried it to the GameCube, and finally reinvented it as a cybernetic Norse epic for Microsoft. By the time it shipped in 2008 it was one of the most debated games of the year, and it has been argued over ever since.

The premise is a brilliant one. The Aesir are not gods in the old sense but cybernetically enhanced protectors of humanity, and Baldur is one of them, fighting off the endless machine hordes that threaten what is left of mankind. Odin, Thor, Freya and Loki all appear in new forms, and the world mixes high-tech corridors with frozen wastelands and the strange digital realm of Yggdrasil.

Combat is played almost entirely with the right analog stick. Point it at an enemy and Baldur slides in with a strike, flick it repeatedly to juggle foes into the air, and use the triggers for guns when it is time to fight at range. Underneath sits a full loot game in the style of Diablo: five classes, from the Berserker to the Bioengineer, skill trees, a choice between Human and Cybernetic paths, and a steady drip of color-coded weapons and armor to compare. When Baldur falls, a Valkyrie descends to carry his body away, a striking touch that also became infamous for how long it takes. Two-player online co-op was built in from the start.

Too Human was planned as the opening chapter of a trilogy that never got finished, and that unfinished quality is part of its fascination. Critics were sharply divided, yet the game has a devoted cult following that admires its ambition, its lore and its unusual control scheme. It never came to another console, which makes the original Xbox 360 disc the authentic way to experience Silicon Knights' last big swing.
