Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Tony La Russa made his name as one of baseball's great tacticians, the Oakland A's manager who won the 1989 World Series and helped shape the modern bullpen around a one-inning closer. It fits, then, that the game bearing his name cares as much about the dugout as the batter's box.

Stormfront Studios, the team behind the Tony La Russa series on home computers, brought that strategy-first approach to the Genesis in this 1993 edition published by Electronic Arts. You still swing the bat, pitch and field, but the game rewards thinking a few moves ahead: setting the lineup, reading the matchups, deciding when to pinch-hit and when to go to the bullpen late in a close game. It plays like a sim that happens to have a joystick attached, the kind of baseball game where the box score matters.

This edition was made only for Sega's console, which gives it a distinct place in the Genesis sports library at a time when EA was setting the pace on the system with Madden and NHL. It arrived as console baseball was still figuring out how much strategy players wanted, and it sits firmly on the thoughtful side of that line.

It is a satisfying pick for players who would rather manage a pennant race than mash buttons, and an interesting piece of early-'90s EA sports history for a Genesis collection.
