Item Description

Tony Hawk spent a decade teaching players to skate with button combos, and then Activision tried something bolder: take the controller away and hand you a board. Tony Hawk: Shred is the 2010 sequel to Tony Hawk: Ride and the second game built around a skateboard-shaped motion peripheral, where you lean, tilt and shift your weight to carve and pop tricks instead of pressing buttons.

The big addition is snow. Shred brings a snowboarding mode to the series for the first time, sending its high-score trick formula down mountain courses alongside the skating sessions. On the Wii version, developed by Buzz Monkey Software, you can ride as your own Mii, a natural fit for the console's living-room crowd. A surfing mode was in the works as well but was cut for time and budget.

Reception was mixed to negative, and sales were small enough that Activision paused the franchise until Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD arrived in 2012. That history is what makes Shred interesting now. It is the final chapter of the Tony Hawk peripheral experiment and one of the last motion-control gambles of the Wii era, a game designed around standing up and riding in the living room. Tony Hawk collectors chasing every entry will want it, and anyone curious about the stranger side of the Wii's hardware experiments will find it a fascinating artifact.

About the game

Tony Hawk: Shred is the 2010 sequel to the video game Tony Hawk: Ride, a spin-off of the Tony Hawk series. The game is a peripheral-based, motion controlled skateboarding game. Shred introduces a snowboarding mode to the series as well as Avatar and Mii support on the Xbox 360 and Wii versions respectively. A "surfing" mode was worked on for the game, but was soon scrapped due to funds and short amount of time to work on it.
