Item Description

The moment it clicks is the manual. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 let you balance on two wheels between tricks, and suddenly a kickflip off a ramp could become a grind into a manual into another grind, one continuous, screen-filling combo. Neversoft's sequel took an already great game and blew the ceiling off it, and the critical response was extraordinary: the PlayStation original sat second only to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Metacritic's all-time rankings.

Career mode is built on two-minute runs packed with goals: hit the score targets, collect the letters S-K-A-T-E, find the hidden tape and knock out level-specific tasks, ten goals per regular level, with cash paid out for every one and more scattered around each level. That money buys stat points, new tricks and boards, and it carries you through a run of levels fans still know by heart: the Hangar in Mullet Falls, School II, Marseille, New York City, Venice Beach, Skatestreet in Ventura, Philadelphia and the Bullring in Mexico, plus the bonus stages Chopper Drop and Skate Heaven.

This is also the entry that brought Create-a-Skater and the Park Editor to the series, two features that became fixtures, along with fully customizable trick sets and signature special moves. The roster is a who's who of the era, from Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen and Steve Caballero to Bob Burnquist, Eric Koston, Chad Muska, Elissa Steamer and Jamie Thomas, with Spider-Man among the unlockable secrets. And the soundtrack, which pulled hip-hop in alongside the punk, put Rage Against the Machine's “Guerrilla Radio,” Naughty by Nature and Powerman 5000 into a generation's permanent memory.

On the Dreamcast, the game was ported by Treyarch and arrived in November 2000, and the console's higher-resolution output gives these levels a crisper look than the PlayStation original. Chain a full lap of the Hangar on a Dreamcast pad and it is easy to see why this is the game that turned the series into a phenomenon.

About the game

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is a skateboarding sports game played from a third-person view across a set of urban environments. Players control professional or fictional skaters and chain together tricks such as grinds, grabs, flips, and lip tricks, using manuals to link combos into longer scoring runs. The career mode tasks players with completing level objectives and competitions to earn cash, which is used to unlock new levels and characters and to improve a skater's stats and equipment. It also includes free skate and single session modes, several competitive multiplayer games, and a level editor for building custom parks. It is the second entry in the Tony Hawk's series.
