Item Description

One button press changed the whole series. Before Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, dropping back into a quarterpipe ended your combo; here, a quick tap on landing triggers the revert, snaps you into a manual and keeps the line alive. Suddenly a vert ramp is a launch pad for combos that can snake across half a level, and the scoring ceiling goes through the roof. This is the original PlayStation edition, built on the proven Pro Skater 2 engine, which brought that leap to the console that started the franchise.

The roster is a who's who of early-2000s skating: Tony Hawk alongside old favorites Bucky Lasek, Jamie Thomas, Chad Muska and Elissa Steamer, plus newcomers Rune Glifberg, Steve Caballero, Eric Koston and flatland legend Rodney Mullen. Fittingly, flatland tricks such as the Casper, the Primo and the Handstand Manual join the move list. Career goals carry you from Los Angeles to Tokyo, through Suburbia and out to Skater's Island, and playing well can unlock hidden pro footage. When the goals run dry, the enhanced Create-a-Skater (now with female skaters) and the Skatepark Editor keep the disc spinning, and two-player modes make it a natural couch rivalry.

Pro Skater 3 is one of the most celebrated games of its generation. GameSpot named it the best PlayStation game of 2001, and the series' blend of a licensed punk, rock and hip-hop soundtrack with pick-up-and-play arcade scoring is a big part of why so many people still remember where they were the first time they linked a revert into a manual. This release carries Sony's Greatest Hits banner, the reprint line reserved for PlayStation titles that sold well enough to earn a second run at a lower price.

The PS2 version gets most of the headlines, but the PS1 edition is its own piece of history: a late, major release for the original PlayStation as the console handed over to its successor, and proof of how much Neversoft's formula could squeeze out of 32-bit hardware. The Greatest Hits release puts the PS1 chapter of the series at its peak on your shelf, a neat companion to the PlayStation 2 release everyone talks about.

About the game

A simpler port of THPS3 for the previous console generation. You may not be able to live like the legend, but now you can skate like him. Skate as the legendary Tony Hawk or choose from a dream team of 12 top pro skaters, including old favorites like Lasek, Thomas, Muska, and Steamer, as well as new talent like Gilfberg, Caballero, Koston, and Mullen. Or enjoy full customization abilities with the enhanced Create-a-Skater (now including female skaters) and the Skatepark Editor. Travel from L.A. to Tokyo, Suburbia to Skater's Island performing challenges and meeting goals. New moves include the Revert, which allows you to link vert tricks, and flatland tricks such as Caspers, the Primo, and Handstand Manual. If you're good, you can even unlock hidden pro footage.
