The revert changed everything. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 added a single button press as you land back in a quarter pipe, letting you roll straight out of a vert trick and into a manual, and suddenly one run could flow from ramp to ledge to rail and back up the wall without the combo ever breaking. Neversoft's third entry is where the series' scoring went from impressive to absurd, and where chasing a million-point line became a perfectly reasonable way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
The levels are bigger and busier than before, crowded with cars, pedestrians and moving hazards that make every spot feel alive. Career mode takes you from a steel Foundry and the woods of Canada to Rio, Suburbia, an Airport, Skater's Island, Los Angeles, Tokyo and a Cruise Ship, stacking high-score targets, the S-K-A-T-E letters, hidden tapes and playful one-off goals into every stage. New flatland moves like the Casper, the Primo and the Handstand Manual join the revert, giving you even more ways to keep a combo alive when you run out of ramps.
Tony Hawk leads a roster that reads like a snapshot of skateboarding in 2001, with Rodney Mullen, Bucky Lasek, Elissa Steamer, Jamie Thomas, Chad Muska, Rune Glifberg, Steve Caballero, Eric Koston and more. Create-a-Skater lets you build your own pro, the park editor lets you design your dream spot, and split-screen modes like Trick Attack, Graffiti and Horse turn a second controller into a long night of trash talk.
Then there is the soundtrack, pure early-2000s energy: Motörhead's "Ace of Spades," CKY's "96 Quite Bitter Beings," Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alien Ant Farm and Xzibit, a mix that sent plenty of players hunting for albums they had never heard of. THPS3 earned some of the highest review scores of its generation and is often named alongside THPS2 as the series' peak. On the GameCube it is a chance to play that original late-2001 Neversoft magic on Nintendo hardware, the run that made the revert a skater's reflex.
