Item Description

Squeezing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 onto a Game Boy Color meant rethinking it from the ground up, and Natsume's solution was smarter than anyone expected. Instead of faking the console game's free-roaming 3D parks, the handheld version mixes side-scrolling courses with isometric overhead levels, letting you chain grinds, flips and grabs on a screen built for 8-bit sprites.

The heart of the console hit is still here. Career Mode sends you through a run of skate spots chasing goals and scores, while Free Skate lets you simply learn a level and push your combos further, with thirteen skaters and seven stages to work through. A password system tracks your progress. Where the PlayStation game was famous for its licensed soundtrack, the Game Boy Color version runs on fully synthesized music, which gives it a chiptune energy all its own.

Natsume had already handled the first Pro Skater on the Game Boy Color, and reviewers noticed the step up. GameSpot scored it 8.9, praising its exquisite gameplay, colorful and detailed environments and fluidly animated skaters, and even the more critical IGN review agreed it improved on its predecessor. Released in November 2000, at the height of the series' popularity, it is the version that brought the Pro Skater 2 craze to school buses and long car rides, and a seriously impressive piece of handheld engineering for a licensed sports game.
