Somewhere on a small island, a Mii version of your best friend is working up the nerve to confess her love to a Mii version of your dentist. Tomodachi Life is that kind of game. Nintendo's 3DS life simulator hands the plot over to the Miis themselves: you create the residents, move them into an apartment building, and then watch the island's social life spiral into romance, rivalry and complete absurdity.

Each Mii gets a voice, generated by text-to-speech that you can tune for pitch and speed, plus a personality shaped by a handful of sliders. From there they make friends, fall out, ask for advice, request new clothes and snacks, and react to their favorite and least favorite foods with wildly exaggerated reactions. When two residents hit it off they can confess, marry and raise a child who eventually grows up and may set out to see other islands. You are pulled into the drama as a helper rather than a puppeteer, and much of the fun is never knowing what the island will do next.

Then there are the moments people remember and share. Miis perform in the concert hall using lyrics you write yourself, set to different musical styles. Their dreams play out as surreal little vignettes you can peek at while they sleep. Mii News reports on island events in deadpan style, and the humor throughout is dry, silly and constantly surprising. The game launched in Japan in 2013 and reached the West in 2014, where Nintendo promoted it with a dedicated Direct presented entirely by Miis.

Its reputation has only grown since, to the point that Nintendo announced a Switch follow-up in 2025. The original 3DS game has a charm all its own: a game you check in on for ten minutes a day, filled with people you know saying things they would never say. Stock the island with family, coworkers and fictional characters, and it turns into a sitcom only you could have cast.
