Tomba is back, and so are the pigs. Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return opens with the pink-haired wild boy hearing from his insect friend Zippo that the Evil Pigs have invaded and that his friend Tabby has vanished, taken while protecting a pendant Tomba gave her. Getting her back means tracking down and capturing five Evil Pigs, then facing the Last Evil Pig, a villain with the power to freeze time itself.
What makes Tomba so addictive is the way it turns a platformer into a living to-do list. Tomba runs along side-scrolling paths that branch at flashing arrows, letting him step into the background or foreground, and some areas open into free-roaming top-down views. Everywhere he goes, someone needs help: a fisherman has lost his hook, Santa Claus has misplaced his sack, and well over a hundred other events wait to be solved. Each one pays out Adventure Points that unlock treasure chests, and the gear inside opens the way to new places. Suits change how he moves, like the flying squirrel suit for gliding across gaps or the pig suit that lets him talk to friendly pigs, while magic feathers whisk him back to any area he has already visited. It plays like a sunny cousin of the Metroidvania, where curiosity is the real power-up. He still fights the Tomba way, latching onto enemies with a bite, and adds flails, boomerangs and mallets to his arsenal.
The sequel's biggest leap is visual. The first game had a 2D look; this follow-up rebuilds the world in fully polygonal 3D, with livelier camera work in its cutscenes and a bright, toy-box style all its own. It comes from Whoopee Camp, the studio founded by Ghosts 'n Goblins creator Tokuro Fujiwara, who stayed on as producer while Kuniaki Kakuwa took over as director, and part of the later level design was handled by Hidetaka Suehiro, the designer many fans now know as Swery.
Critics praised its variety and controls, even if some felt the errands could pile up, and that steady stream of small goals is exactly what completionists love about it. Weak sales meant Whoopee Camp disbanded after this game, which is why Tomba fans spent decades hoping for more. A 2025 special edition finally brought the adventure to modern platforms, but this PlayStation original is where the Evil Swine first made their return.
Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return is a side-scrolling platformer in which the titular character, Tomba, moves on predetermined linear paths until he reaches an intersection point where a flashing arrow appears over his head. At that point, Tomba can move in any direction the arrow points. Some areas of the game can be explored in a top-down view, allowing Tomba to move around freely. The main goal of the game is to complete all 137 objectives (133 make the regular ones, while the other four are obtained from a Tomba 1 save file), which range from retrieving a fishing hook for a fisherman to helping Santa Claus find his "sack". Completing a task earns the player "Adventure Points", which can be used to unlock specific boxes scattered around the game's world. As the game progresses, Tomba can obtain suits that give him special abilities. For example, the flying squirrel suit allows Tomba to glide long distances, while the pig suit allows Tomba to communicate with friendly pigs. Scattered throughout the levels are magical feathers that can instantly transport Tomba to any area that has previously been visited.
