Lara Croft is missing, presumed dead beneath the Great Pyramid, and Tomb Raider Chronicles opens with the people closest to her gathered at a memorial to share the stories they remember. It is a clever way to follow the cliffhanger ending of The Last Revelation, and it gives Core Design the freedom to send Lara anywhere, at any point in her life. The result is the most varied of the classic Tomb Raider games: four self-contained episodes, each with its own setting, tone and twist on the formula.
The first story drops Lara into Rome on the trail of the Philosopher's Stone, where she crosses paths again with Larson and Pierre, the rivals she first faced back in the original Tomb Raider. From there she goes after the Spear of Destiny aboard a Russian submarine, a tense run through cramped corridors and machinery. The third episode turns back the clock to a teenage Lara on a haunted Irish island, unarmed and relying on wits and agility against something supernatural. The finale is pure late-90s techno-thriller: Lara in a sleek black suit infiltrating a high-tech corporate tower to recover the Iris artifact, leaning on stealth and gadgets instead of guns.
Under the hood it is classic Tomb Raider, all grid-based platforming, ledge-hanging, lever puzzles and gunplay, with a handful of new tricks layered on top. Lara can now walk tightropes, swing from horizontal bars and somersault forward off a ledge from a crouch, and a grappling hook joins her inventory for the episodes that need it. Those additions make the movement feel fuller than ever, and the short-story structure means each chapter has room to try something different.
Chronicles was the last of Core Design's original run of Tomb Raider games before the series moved to a new engine with The Angel of Darkness, and it is one of only two Lara Croft adventures released on the Dreamcast, alongside The Last Revelation. Critics at the time felt the formula was getting tired, but fans have grown fond of its anthology format, especially the young Lara episode. On the Dreamcast it completes a neat pair with The Last Revelation, closing out Lara's original run on Sega's final console.
Tomb Raider: Chronicles is the fifth game in the Tomb Raider series and the sequel to Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation. It was developed by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive. Like its predecessors, Tomb Raider: Chronicles is an action game with puzzle-solving and platforming elements. The gameplay is very similar to that of the previous games, with the addition of a few new skills. Lara can now walk on tightropes, swing on horizontal bars, and somersault forwards from a ledge while crouching. A grappling hook has been added to her inventory. The game also includes a level editor, allowing the player to create new stages for Lara to explore.
