Item Description
Lara Croft's first tomb is a cave she wakes up in, hanging upside down and wrapped in cloth, with no idea who strung her there. That opening sets the tone for Crystal Dynamics' 2013 reboot, which strips away the dual pistols and the confident swagger and replaces them with a young archaeologist shipwrecked on an island in the Dragon's Triangle, scared, hurt and determined to keep her friends alive.
The Endurance has gone down off the coast of Yamatai, a lost kingdom once ruled by the legendary Sun Queen Himiko, and the island is not empty. A cult called the Solarii, led by the unsettling Mathias, has been collecting castaways for years, and Lara's best friend Sam may be exactly what they have been waiting for. Lara's mentor Conrad Roth, the ancient Stormguard and the storms that keep anyone from leaving all push the story toward a tense, cinematic finale. Camilla Luddington's performance as Lara carries real emotional weight, and Jason Graves' score adds percussive dread.
The play is a smart mix of climbing, stealth, combat and exploration across a semi-open island. The bow is Lara's signature weapon, quiet and deadly, with rope arrows that open up new routes, and the climbing axe turns sheer rock faces into paths. Salvage gathered from crates and wreckage upgrades weapons at base camps, where Lara also spends experience on skills across Survivor, Hunter and Brawler trees. Revisiting areas with new gear reveals hidden documents, relics and optional tombs, compact puzzle chambers that echo the brain-teasers of the classic series. A competitive multiplayer mode, built by Eidos Montréal, rounds out the package.
The reboot was a critical and commercial hit that launched the Survivor trilogy, continued in Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Playing it on the Xbox 360, where it first arrived, means seeing where the modern Lara was born, before the sequels refined the formula, in a story that still hits hard.
