Item Description

There is a moment in Titanfall 2's campaign when a mission hands you a device that flips you between two points in time with the press of a button, and the shooter you thought you were playing turns into something far stranger. That level, Effect and Cause, is the one people bring up first, but Respawn Entertainment's 2016 sequel is full of ideas like it. The original Titanfall was multiplayer only; this follow-up added the thing fans had asked for loudest, a full single-player story, and it turned out to be one of the finest shooter campaigns of its generation.

You play Jack Cooper, a Militia rifleman on the frontier world of Typhon who inherits the Vanguard-class Titan BT-7274 when its pilot, Captain Lastimosa, is killed. The bond between the two is the heart of the story. BT is literal-minded, loyal and unexpectedly funny, and by the end their partnership carries real emotional weight. The six-to-eight-hour campaign almost never repeats itself: one stretch sends you racing through a colossal factory that assembles buildings around you as you go, and along the way you face the Apex Predators, Kuben Blisk's mercenary crew, each with a boss Titan and an attitude to match.

Simply moving is a joy. Pilots wall-run, slide, double-jump and grapple, chaining moves so smoothly that crossing a room feels like a stunt, and the movement is still held up as a high-water mark for fast first-person shooters. When you climb into BT, the pace shifts to heavy, punchy mech combat, with new loadouts claimed from defeated enemy Titans. Multiplayer was built around the same push and pull, with Pilots and Titans sharing the battlefield in modes such as Attrition and Bounty Hunt and six distinct Titans at launch, among them Ion, Scorch, Northstar and Ronin.

Its release was famously squeezed between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare in the autumn of 2016, and sales suffered for it. Its reputation tells a different story. Titanfall 2 has spent the years since gathering the kind of word of mouth few shooters earn, and its universe lives on in Apex Legends, which Respawn set in the same world. The Xbox One release is a fine way to own the campaign that proved what a studio of Call of Duty veterans could do once they were free to experiment.
