Item Description

“Protocol 3: Protect the Pilot.” By the time BT-7274 says it, Titanfall 2 has already won you over. Respawn Entertainment, the studio founded by former Infinity Ward leaders, followed its multiplayer-only debut with a full single-player campaign, and it turned out to be one of the most inventive shooter campaigns of its generation. You play Jack Cooper, a Militia rifleman on the frontier world of Typhon who inherits a Vanguard-class Titan named BT after his mentor, Captain Lastimosa, is killed, and the friendship between a rookie soldier and his towering, deadpan robot partner becomes the emotional core of the game.

Movement is everything. As a Pilot you wall-run, double-jump, slide and chain momentum across rooftops and cliff faces, and the campaign keeps inventing new ways to use it. “Effect and Cause” hands you a device that flips between the present and the past of a ruined research facility at the press of a button, mid-jump if you dare, while “Into the Abyss” has you racing through a vast automated factory that assembles entire buildings around you. Then you climb into BT and the pace shifts to heavyweight mech brawls against the Apex Predators, a crew of mercenary bosses who each bring their own Titan and attitude.

The multiplayer side was built around that same mix of agile Pilots and armored Titans sharing one battlefield. A grappling hook joined the Pilot toolkit, and six distinct Titan classes shipped at launch, including the sword-swinging Ronin and the long-range Northstar. Post-launch updates added new maps, modes and the return of the cooperative Frontier Defense.

Launching one week after Battlefield 1 and one week before Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Titanfall 2 never found the sales its quality deserved, but its reputation has grown every year since. Its campaign is now routinely named among the finest in the genre, and Respawn's universe lived on in Apex Legends, which shares its world and several familiar faces. On PS4 it is a tightly paced adventure you can finish in a weekend and keep replaying just for the thrill of the movement.
