Item Description

Two heroes, one Relic and two completely different reasons to want it. Threads of Fate asks you to choose a side before the adventure even starts, and that choice changes far more than the face on screen. Rue is an earnest young man with no memory of his past, determined to bring back Claire, the friend and caretaker taken from him by an armored stranger. Mint is a spoiled, hot-tempered princess of the East Heaven Kingdom who has been cast out by her sister Maya and wants the Relic so she can reclaim her throne and, while she is at it, conquer the world. Both are chasing an artifact said to grant any wish.

Their paths cross constantly, but each plays out as its own campaign built around its own abilities. Rue collects coins from defeated monsters and transforms into those creatures, carrying up to five forms at a time and borrowing their bodies and skills to fight and solve puzzles. Mint battles with a pair of rings she can swing up close or hurl across the room, and she builds an arsenal of elemental magic that can be combined into new effects. Everything happens in real time across colorful 3D environments, with platforming, puzzle rooms and boss fights all branching out from the cozy hub town of Carona, where you rest, shop and cash in your monster coins.

This is Square at the turn of the millennium in an experimental mood. Directed by Koji Sugimoto with music by Junya Nakano, it was released in Japan in 1999 as Dewprism and reached North America in 2000 through Square Electronic Arts, during the same busy stretch that brought Vagrant Story and Chrono Cross to the PlayStation. Where those games went grand or grim, Threads of Fate went light and personable, and its English localization and characters drew real praise. Mint in particular steals every scene she is in, a gleefully selfish heroine who plays against every RPG princess stereotype.

It is a compact adventure rather than a sprawling epic, and that works in its favor. A second playthrough shows the same journey from the opposite side, with new motives, new abilities and a fuller picture of the mystery behind the Relic. For anyone who loves the PlayStation-era Square catalog and wants something off the well-trodden path, it is a charming, easygoing action RPG that earns a second run.
