Picture Bartz, Cloud and Squall shrunk down to storybook size, charging into battle while you tap in time to “Clash on the Big Bridge,” and you have the delightfully strange appeal of Theatrhythm Final Bar Line. Square Enix and developer indieszero built a rhythm game out of Final Fantasy's music, then wrapped it in the trappings of an RPG, and the result is a celebration of more than three decades of Nobuo Uematsu and his fellow composers.
The base game holds 385 tracks, drawn from every numbered entry from Final Fantasy I through XV along with spin-offs, side stories and mobile titles. Songs play out in three kinds of stages. Battle Music Stages send your party of four against monsters across four note lanes; Field Music Stages trace a single winding line, with held notes you steer up and down with the stick as your character strolls the overworld; and Event Music Stages play over scenes from the games themselves. Difficulty climbs from Basic through Expert and Ultimate, with a punishing Supreme level on a portion of the songs, and a Simple style turns every note into a single button for players who just want to enjoy the music.
Around the music sits a surprisingly involved RPG layer. Series Quests walk through each game's soundtrack in turn, with stages that ask you to recruit characters, hit score targets and take down bosses, unlocking songs and new heroes as you go. More than a hundred characters can be leveled, given abilities and backed by Summonstones that call in classic summons for huge damage, so building the right party for a stubborn stage becomes its own puzzle. Tracks from other Square Enix series such as Chrono, Mana, SaGa and Nier round out the playlist.
Two players can share a song in the cooperative Pair style, and the Multi Battle mode was designed for up to four players chasing the top score. Critics welcomed it warmly in 2023, praising both the size of the library and note charts that ease beginners in while still punishing experts. Having started on the Nintendo 3DS, the series makes its home-console debut here, with the deepest Final Fantasy jukebox it has ever offered.
Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is a game in the Final Fantasy musical spin-off series, packed with 385 music tracks from across the whole Final Fantasy series.
