Item Description
Coney Island is a long way from the Bronx when every gang in New York thinks you killed Cyrus. Walter Hill's 1979 cult film turned one desperate night into a legend, and Rockstar Toronto's The Warriors does something smarter than simply replaying it. Most of the game takes place in the months before the great summit, showing how the Warriors earned their colors, built their reputation and made the enemies who come back to haunt them, before the story finally catches up with the film's famous all-night run home.
At its heart this is a brawler, and a terrific one. Fights are rough and physical: grab an opponent, slam him into a wall, pin him to the ground and keep swinging, with a rage meter that lets you cut loose when things get out of hand. You can give orders to the rest of the gang mid-fight, telling them to hold position, scatter or wreck everything in sight. Between rumbles the neighborhoods are yours to work, mugging passersby, lifting car radios, holding up stores and spraying the Warriors' tag over rival turf. A second player can jump into the story at any time on a split screen, and fighting through a set piece side by side with a friend is the best way to experience it.
The game wears its love for the film everywhere. Several of the original actors returned to voice their characters, so Swan, Ajax, Cleon and the rest sound like themselves, and Luther and the Rogues are as slimy as ever. The rival gangs, from the baseball-bat-wielding Furies to the Orphans and the Punks, are given room to become proper adversaries. Clear the story and you unlock Armies of the Night, a side-scrolling beat 'em up that pays tribute to the arcade brawlers of the late 1980s.
The Warriors has never had the profile of Rockstar's bigger series, which is part of why the people who played it hold it so dear. It is a tight, focused, grimy action game with a real sense of time and place, and on the original Xbox it plays just as it did when the gang first came out to play.
