Item Description

"Clementine will remember that." Five words in the corner of the screen, and suddenly every reply, every silence and every decision feels heavier than a boss fight. Telltale Games' The Walking Dead turned an episodic point-and-click adventure into one of the most talked-about games of 2012, and it did it with almost no shooting at all.

Lee Everett is in the back of a police cruiser on his way to prison when the world ends outside Atlanta. Taking shelter in a suburban house, he finds Clementine, an eight-year-old girl hiding in her treehouse while her parents are away in Savannah, and the season becomes the story of a man with a past trying to protect a child who sees everything he does. Over five episodes, from A New Day to No Time Left, they fall in with a fragile group of survivors, among them the fiercely loyal Kenny and his family, and with them they hole up in a Macon drugstore, visit a dairy farm whose owners are a little too welcoming, and push toward the coast.

The design is simple and devastating. Conversations run on a timer, so hesitation is a choice too, and the game keeps track of how you treat people. Some decisions are instant life-and-death calls, like choosing which of two survivors to save when the walkers break through, and the game later shows you how your choices compared with everyone else's. It is set in the world of Robert Kirkman's comic, with appearances from familiar faces like Glenn and Hershel, but tells its own story. Dave Fennoy's Lee and Melissa Hutchison's Clementine give it a heart that players still talk about.

The season swept Game of the Year honors, including at the 2012 Spike Video Game Awards, and redefined what a licensed game could be. On disc for the Xbox 360, a release that was first sold one episode at a time, it makes a striking collector's piece for a series that changed story-driven games, and the place to meet Lee and Clementine.
