Item Description

"Clementine will remember that." Few lines in games carry as much weight, and Telltale's The Walking Dead made players feel every word. Set in Robert Kirkman's comic universe during the earliest days of the outbreak, it follows Lee Everett, a former college professor being driven to prison for murder when the world ends around him. Taking shelter in a suburb of Atlanta, he finds Clementine, an eight-year-old girl alone in her house while her parents are away in Savannah, and promises to keep her safe.

That bond is the heart of the game. Across five episodes, Lee and Clementine survive a siege at a Macon drugstore, a dairy farm whose owners seem too generous to trust, a runaway train and the drowned streets of Savannah, alongside survivors like the fiercely loyal Kenny and the hard-edged Lilly. Gameplay favors conversation, exploration and short bursts of tense action over traditional puzzles. Dialogue choices run on a timer, so you often answer before you have time to think, and the people around you remember what you said, whom you sided with and whom you left behind.

The Walking Dead was a turning point for Telltale and for narrative games as a whole. It took Game of the Year at the 2012 Spike Video Game Awards among a long list of honors, and its blend of choice, consequence and character-driven storytelling shaped story games for the decade that followed. Its finale is one of the most famous emotional gut-punches in the medium, and the moments leading up to it are why so many players still talk about Lee in the same breath as gaming's great protagonists.

Its episodic structure suits the PlayStation Vita beautifully: each chapter runs a couple of hours, ideal for a few evenings with headphones on and the lights down. This is the season that introduced Clementine, the character who would carry Telltale's series through three more seasons, and the place where her story begins.
