Item Description

Mr. Burns has bought Springfield's public transit system and filled the streets with radioactive buses, so the townspeople do the only sensible thing: they start driving each other around for cash, hoping to raise enough money to buy the system back. That premise is pure Simpsons, and it powers The Simpsons: Road Rage, Radical Entertainment's frantic 2001 driving game.

If it feels familiar, that is no accident. The game borrows the Crazy Taxi formula almost wholesale: grab a passenger, race the clock to their destination, earn bonus cash for speed, then do it again. Sega noticed, and the resemblance led to a patent lawsuit that is now a well-known footnote in gaming history. What Road Rage adds is Springfield itself. You pick from a cast of familiar residents and their cars, ferry the townsfolk around, and dodge Burns' nuclear buses while passengers trade one-liners voiced by the show's cast.

Money from fares unlocks new drivers, vehicles and starting points across town, and alongside the main mode there are missions, a free-roaming Sunday Drive and a split-screen head-to-head mode for two players racing for the same fares. Reviews were mixed at the time, mostly because of how closely it followed Crazy Taxi, but the jokes, the cameos and the pure chaos still make it a fun pick-up-and-play session.

Road Rage is also the first step toward something bigger: two years later Radical took what it learned about driving through Springfield and built The Simpsons: Hit & Run. The Platinum Hits reissue makes it an easy way to see where that idea started.

About the game

The Simpsons: Road Rage is similar to Sega's 1999 video game Crazy Taxi, in that the main objective is to drive picked up passengers to their destinations as quickly as possible. The player receives money upon successfully dropping off each passenger, and bonuses are obtained when they are transported in a short amount of time. Players have to avoid certain hurdles, such as other vehicles and Burns' nuclear transit buses. The game contains sixteen different collectible vehicles, six starting locations, and ten different missions. In order to collect the vehicles and unlock starting locations, players must earn progressively more money for each vehicle or starting location they want to get.
