Item Description

Early in The Simpsons Game, the family discovers they are characters in a video game, and from that moment the jokes aim squarely at the medium itself. Comic Book Guy pops up to announce each video game cliché you stumble into, and the levels skewer familiar genres while packing in references to Springfield locations straight from the show. It arrived in 2007, the same year The Simpsons Movie brought the family to theaters, and the PSP version comes from Rebellion.

Play is third-person 3D platforming with a healthy dose of brawling, and the levels are built around each family member's talents. Bart glides on his Bartman cape, Marge rallies townspeople to follow her and do her bidding, and Homer's puzzles tend to involve putting his considerable weight to good use. Many missions pair two family members, so you switch between them to get past obstacles that only one of them can handle.

The real draw is the comedy. The show's voice cast brings the family and Springfield's regulars to life, and the cutscenes are animated in the show's own style. Critics were lukewarm on the gameplay itself, pointing to a stubborn camera, a short run time and, on PSP, a choppy frame rate, but reviewers consistently singled out the humor and the voice work as the reason to play.

That makes it a game to enjoy like a long, playable episode: a few evenings of satire about gaming tropes, delivered in the show's own voices. It is a fun piece of Simpsons history from the year the family hit movie theaters, and a portable way to revisit the family's most self-aware video game outing.
