Item Description

Bart Simpson has fallen asleep doing his homework, and the pages of his assignment have blown away into his dreams. To wake up with something to hand in, he has to chase them through the strangest corners of his own head, and that premise turns Bart's Nightmare into something rarer than a typical licensed platformer: a grab bag of completely different games stitched together by a single bad night's sleep.

The hub is Windy World, a dream version of Bart's street where homework pages float past and the neighborhood turns against him. Living mailboxes attack, Jimbo and his gang drag Bart along against his will, and Principal Skinner tries to stuff him into his Sunday school suit. Bart fights back by blowing bubble gum and spitting watermelon seeds, and grabbing a page sends him through a colored door into a minigame, each in a different genre. Bartzilla has Bart stomping through Springfield before facing Homer Kong and Momthra; Bartman flies over town battling Sherri and Terri in a hot air balloon, Barney on a pink elephant and Mr. Burns in a biplane; Itchy & Scratchy turns the Simpson house into a death trap; Idaho Simpson braves the Temple of Maggie; and another stage shrinks Bart down for a trip through his own bloodstream.

Developed by Sculptured Software and published by Acclaim, it reached the Super Nintendo first in 1992, with a Genesis version following. Matt Groening was involved closely enough to change the color of Bart's eyes, which he felt were too yellow. Critics were split in a way that still rings true: the cartoon-faithful art, humor and invention drew praise, with Entertainment Weekly calling it “a surreal blast” and Super Play finding the sub-games brilliant, while others found the controls awkward and the challenge stiff.

The reward for all that effort is a letter grade on Bart's homework, stuck to the Simpson fridge for the family to react to, which is about as Simpsons as an ending gets. It's a vivid artifact of the show's early peak, when Bart was the most famous kid on television and even his nightmares were worth turning into a video game.
