Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Frank Castle does not do subtle, and neither does this cartridge. Capcom's 1993 arcade brawler starred Marvel's grimmest anti-hero, with S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury along as player two, on a mission to tear down the Kingpin's criminal empire. The arcade original wore its comic-book roots on its sleeve, splashing sound effects like “BLAM!” across the screen, and the Genesis version, developed by Sculptured Software and published by Capcom in 1995, brought that two-player rampage home.
What separates The Punisher from Capcom's other brawlers of the era is the arsenal. Alongside punches, kicks, throws and special attacks, the arcade design hands you melee weapons, throwing weapons and firearms that break after limited use, so you are always scavenging for the next one. The arcade campaign runs from an illegal casino and the streets of New York to the Kingpin's own building, with Bonebreaker and robotic Guardroids among the bosses standing in the way.
Honesty about the port: Sculptured Software had to scale things back for Sega's hardware, with simpler graphics and sound, fewer enemies on screen and much of the breakable scenery made solid, and some of the arcade's harsher violence was toned down (Nick Fury even lost his cigar animation). Pick the easy setting and the game ends after just three stages, so play on normal or higher if you want to reach the Kingpin. Reviews were mixed, but the cooperative core survives: two players, a screen full of goons and a lot of satisfying punishment.
It was the only home conversion of Capcom's Punisher arcade game released in its day, which makes this cartridge the way to play it on original hardware. On a Genesis shelf it is the gritty, grown-up counterpart to the brighter Marvel games on the system.
The Punisher is a 1993 beat 'em up arcade game. It stars the Marvel Comics' anti-hero the Punisher and co-stars S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury as the second player's character as they embark on a mission to kill the crime lord the Kingpin and bring down his organization. Whilst following the same general formula as Capcom's previous beat 'em ups, the game has a range of usable weapons and a comics-style presentation.
