Need a tank? Point at the ground, spend a few points and one rolls up in seconds. The Outfit is a World War II shooter from Relic Entertainment, the studio behind Homeworld and Company of Heroes, and it treats the battlefields of occupied Europe less like a history lesson and more like a demolition site. Relic called the idea Destruction on Demand, and it gives this early Xbox 360 game a personality none of its more serious contemporaries had.
You command a squad as one of three leaders, Tommy Mac, J.D. Tyler and Deuce Williams, voiced by a cast that includes Robert Patrick and Ron Perlman. Each brings different strengths: Tommy Mac can soak up punishment and carries a flamethrower and machine gun, but pays more for reinforcements. Fighting earns Field Units, which you spend on the spot to call in tanks and vehicles, build machine-gun nests and anti-tank emplacements, or order air and artillery strikes. Your soldiers man whatever you deploy, and you can climb into any vehicle or gun yourself whenever you want to take over the carnage.
The environments are built to come apart, so farmhouses, walls and church towers crumble under shellfire, and the twelve-mission campaign moves from a beach landing through the liberation of a French town to the hunt for SS commander Victor Morder. Cooperative missions and Xbox Live versus play were a big part of the design, and reviewers of the day singled out the multiplayer as the main reason to keep playing.
Arriving in March 2006, a few months after the console launched, The Outfit earned middling-to-positive reviews and a loyal following among players who liked their war games loud. It is a time capsule of the 360's first year, when studios were experimenting with what the new hardware could do, and a fun reminder that Relic's strategy instincts could translate into pure arcade mayhem.
The Outfit is a World War II game that, unlike many other games in the genre, focuses almost entirely on destruction. While you will usually need to take a tactical approach to gameplay when on foot, you will earn points called "Field Units" that can be used to buy equipment like tanks and gun turrets to destroy Axis soldiers. You can simply buy equipment by using the Y button on your controller in conjunction with the left thumbstick button to select an item to buy. As such, the game developers call The Outfit "destruction on demand". The equipment you buy with Field Units will initially be occupied by AI-controlled soldiers, but you can replace whoever is using the equipment so that you can have some fun blowing stuff up. Sporting a fully destructible environment, almost everything in The Outfit can be blown up. You can play as one of three characters. Tommy Mac can take lots of damage before dying, and comes equipped with a flamethrower and machine gun, but equipment will cost him more Field Units than other characters.
