Item Description

Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and composer Nobuo Uematsu, reunited for one more fantasy epic, on the Wii of all places. The Last Story is the result: a tightly told action RPG from Sakaguchi's studio Mistwalker, co-developed with AQ Interactive, that trades sprawling world maps and menu-driven battles for a single richly drawn island and real-time combat that feels closer to a tactical action game.

The setting is Lazulis Island, a bustling walled city ruled by a count, in a world that is slowly being drained of life. Zael is a young mercenary who dreams of becoming a knight, part of a scrappy band led by his friend Dagran alongside the hard-drinking Syrenne, the quiet Yurick and the gentle Mirania. A chance meeting with the noblewoman Calista pulls him into the island's politics and an invasion by the Gurak, and the story keeps its focus on that small, likable crew, which gives its turns real weight.

Battles are where The Last Story feels most distinctive. Zael can trigger Gathering, a power that draws every enemy's attention to himself so his allies can cast safely, and the fights reward thinking about position: ducking behind cover, picking off targets with a crossbow, and pausing in a command mode to direct your companions. Spells leave magic circles on the field that Zael can scatter with his Gale ability to spread their effects across the battlefield, so the best fights feel like small tactical puzzles played at full speed. Uematsu's score gives the city, the battles and the quiet moments their own character.

In North America the game arrived in 2012 through XSEED Games, one of the three Wii RPGs, alongside Xenoblade Chronicles and Pandora's Tower, that fans lobbied for in the Operation Rainfall campaign. It became one of the defining late-life RPGs on the Wii, a chance to see two Final Fantasy legends experiment with a more intimate kind of adventure, and it plays best right where it was made, on the Wii.

About the game

The Last Story takes place upon the island fortress of Lazulis, in a world that is slowly being drained of life by an unknown force. The story focuses on a group of mercenaries looking for work on Lazulis; one of their number, Zael, dreams of becoming a knight. During gameplay, the player controls Zael as he and the mercenary group to which he belongs undertake missions on Lazulis. Zael can command the rest of the mercenary squad during missions, and fights in battles that involve action, tactical and stealth elements.
