Twenty years after a fungal outbreak collapsed civilization, a hardened smuggler named Joel takes a job to get a fourteen-year-old girl out of the Boston quarantine zone. That simple errand becomes a cross-country journey, and Naughty Dog's story of Joel and Ellie grew into one of the most acclaimed narratives the medium has produced. The Last of Us debuted on the PlayStation 3 in 2013, and this Remastered release brought it to the PlayStation 4 a year later with sharper character models, improved lighting and shadows, and a jump to 1080p at 60 frames per second.

Every encounter is a lesson in scarcity. Ammunition is precious, supplies double as ingredients, and the same rag and bottle of alcohol might become a health kit or a Molotov depending on what the next room demands. Listen mode lets Joel pinpoint enemies by sound, and the Clickers, blind Infected that hunt by echolocation and kill with a single grab, turn even quiet corridors into nerve-shredding stealth puzzles. Human enemies can be worse, flanking you and pressing the attack the moment they hear an empty gun click.

The journey moves through the seasons and across a hollowed-out America: the flooded streets and toppled skyscrapers of Boston alongside Tess, Bill's booby-trapped town, the hunter-controlled streets of Pittsburgh where the pair fall in with brothers Henry and Sam, and a harrowing winter that puts Ellie front and center. Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson anchor it with performances that raised the bar for acting in games, and Gustavo Santaolalla's sparse, haunting guitar score is recognizable within a few notes.

The Remastered release also folds in Left Behind, the standalone chapter in which Ellie and her friend Riley spend one unforgettable night in an abandoned mall, plus two map packs for Factions, the tense, resource-driven multiplayer mode the game was built with. It became a fixture of the PS4 library and was reissued in Sony's PlayStation Hits line, and it is the most rounded way to experience the original story on the console before Part II picks up the thread.
