The Last of Us Part II is the rare sequel that refuses to play it safe. Naughty Dog picks up five years after the original, with Ellie now a young woman living in the fortified community of Jackson, Wyoming, riding patrols through the snowy wilderness with Dina and starting to imagine something like a normal life. When a brutal act of violence shatters that peace, Ellie sets out for a ruined, rain-soaked Seattle in search of revenge, and the rest of the story asks, relentlessly, what that pursuit will cost her and everyone around her.

The combat is some of the most intense on the PlayStation 4. Ellie can go prone and crawl through tall grass, dodge incoming swings, squeeze through gaps and break line of sight, and the enemies fight back with unnerving intelligence: soldiers call out to each other by name, and their dogs follow your scent trail through the level. Seattle is contested by two very different human factions, the heavily armed Washington Liberation Front and the Seraphites, a religious sect that communicates by whistling and favors bows. The Infected have grown nastier too, with bloated, acid-spewing Shamblers joining the Clickers and Stalkers from the first game. Scavenging, crafting and weapon upgrades return, deepened by skill trees unlocked through training manuals hidden in the world.

Partway through, the story makes one of the boldest structural choices in modern games, handing control to Abby, a WLF soldier whose path collides with Ellie's, and making you live the conflict from the other side. It divided players at launch and still sparks debate, a measure of how hard the game swings. Ashley Johnson and Laura Bailey give remarkable performances, and Gustavo Santaolalla returns with a spare, guitar-led score, with Ellie herself picking up a guitar in some of the quietest and most affecting scenes.

There is room to breathe as well. An open stretch of downtown Seattle, explored on horseback, rewards curiosity with locked safes, scrawled notes and side stories that flesh out what happened to the city. The game went on to win Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2020, and its extensive accessibility options set a new bar for the industry. Arriving near the end of the PS4's life, it shows Naughty Dog wringing every last drop out of the hardware, and it is the chapter that completes the arc Joel and Ellie began in 2013.

About the game

The Last of Us Part II is an action-adventure game set five years after the events of The Last of Us. The player traverses post-apocalyptic environments such as buildings and forests to advance the story. They can use firearms, improvised weapons, and stealth to defend against hostile humans and cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus. The game intermittently switches control between Ellie and Abby, and also briefly Joel in the opening sequence. The nimble nature of the player character introduces platforming elements, allowing the player to jump and climb to traverse environments and gain advantages during combat.
