You wake as a spirit with no memory, drifting through a decaying mansion, and the only one who seems to see you is a soft-spoken Maid. She offers to guide you through the house's history one door at a time, promising that somewhere in its tragedies lies the truth about who you are. That quiet setup opens into a gothic story so admired that its Switch release holds a Metacritic score of 96.

Each door leads to a different era. In 1603, the Rhodes siblings Mell and Nellie live beneath the mansion's roof; in 1707, with the mansion in ruins, a beast who claims to want only a peaceful life makes his home there; in 1869, a young businessman named Jacopo becomes its owner. Each works as a complete tale of love, cruelty and ruin, and each leaves a thread behind. Slowly those threads pull together, back toward the oldest story the house holds and the curse at its heart, and the payoff reframes everything that came before.

Writer Keika Hanada and the small team at Novectacle first released the game on PC in Japan in 2012, and its English release in 2016 brought it a devoted following in the West. Moyataro's painterly artwork gives every era its own mood, and its haunting soundtrack, rich with vocal songs, gives the mansion a voice of its own.

On Switch the game arrived in 2021 as the Dreams of the Revenants Edition, which gathers the main story with the prequel A Requiem for Innocence, the sequel Reincarnation, which follows the central cast reborn in the present day, and a set of shorter stories. It is a long, patient read that deals frankly with violence, abuse and prejudice, and it rewards that patience with an ending that lands with real force. Few stories on the Switch are this ambitious about what a mansion, a maid and a handful of doors can hold.
