Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Fred Flintstone has a to-do list, and it is a long one. Taito's 1993 Genesis platformer hands him seven tasks to get done, from tracking down Pebbles to recovering Wilma's lost necklace, and he handles trouble the Stone Age way, with a jump and a heavy club for whatever gets in his path.

The appeal is the Hanna-Barbera cartoon brought into 16 bits. Fred looks and moves like his television self, the setting carries the familiar prehistoric-suburbia charm, and the game strings its errands across a long run of side-scrolling levels built for steady exploring rather than breakneck speed. Taito knew the license well, having already brought Fred to the NES in The Rescue of Dino & Hoppy, and this was its take on the family for Sega's console.

Reviews in 1993 were mixed, with some magazines enjoying it and others finding it ordinary, so this is a cartridge to enjoy for its charm rather than a hidden classic. That charm counts for a lot if you grew up with Saturday-morning reruns of Fred, Barney and the gang.

There is also an interesting piece of Genesis history attached to the name. A separate Flintstones game from Ocean was ported to the Genesis in 1995 but only ever distributed through the Sega Channel, and for years it was considered lost. Taito's game is the Flintstones cartridge that actually reached store shelves, which makes it the one to look for when building a Hanna-Barbera or licensed-cartoon shelf for the system.

About the game

In 1995, Sega Genesis port of Ocean's The Flintstones was released exclusively via the Sega Channel. Due to its limited release, the port was previously considered lost, with the only playable build existing being an early prototype build that was dumped in 2019. The final broadcast version was ultimately archived by the Video Game History Foundation and Gaming Alexandria in 2025.
