Item Description

The DioField Chronicle tries something that few strategy RPGs attempt: it takes the careful planning of a tactics game and lets the battle keep moving while you think. Developed by Lancarse and published by Square Enix in 2022, it is a fresh, unusual experiment from a publisher with a long history in the genre, and it has a cult appeal all its own.

The heart of it is the Real-Time Tactical Battle system. You command a small squad of units on open battlefields, issuing orders for movement, attacks and special skills, and the action pauses whenever you select a unit, so the pace feels urgent without becoming a click-fest. Positioning matters enormously: flanking an enemy for a backstab, drawing aggression onto a sturdy soldier so archers and mages can work, or sending cavalry around the line to reach a vulnerable caster. Battles are short and punchy, which makes it easy to experiment with different squad builds and skill loadouts between missions.

The story follows the Blue Fox, a mercenary company led by Andrias Rhondarson, Fredret Lester, Iscarion Sharpe and Waltaquin Redditch, on the island of DioField. The Kingdom of Alletain sits on rich deposits of Jade, the mineral that powers the magical weaponry of this world, and that makes it a prize for the Empire and the Alliance fighting over the continent. What begins as a tale of sellswords for hire becomes a story of court intrigue, divided loyalties and the price of ambition. The world mixes medieval fantasy with more modern touches, and the score comes from Ramin Djawadi, famous for Game of Thrones, working with Brandon Campbell.

Reviews at launch were mixed on its storytelling and pacing, but its battle system won real admirers, and it has since found an audience among tactics fans looking for something outside the grid-based formula. This is the PAL-region release, a distinctive import pickup for PS5 collectors who track regional variants.
