Item Description

A spiked black tower called the Ebon Sting has erupted from the earth of Joseon, and the oil seeping from it has turned the kingdom's people into demons. Into that ruined land walks Kim Rip, a swordsman who has lost his memory and carries something dark in his own blood. The Devil Within: Satgat, from Korean studio Newcore Games, builds its whole identity around that premise: to defeat the demons, Kim Rip may have to become one.

It plays as a 2.5D side-scrolling action game that blends Soulslike combat with Metroidvania exploration. Fights are built around precision, and the Concentrated Counterattack System rewards perfectly timed guards, dashes and dodges with a heavy counterstrike, so the best players learn to read an enemy's rhythm rather than mash. Defeating the powerful demons that rule each region grants new demonic abilities, and a deep skill tree lets you shape Kim Rip's fighting style as he levels up. Between battles, large interconnected maps of ruined cities, mountains, forests and caves hide artifacts that strengthen him and paths that only open once he has grown stronger.

The setting is what sets it apart from the many Metroidvanias on the market. Instead of gothic castles or sci-fi stations, Satgat draws on the look of Joseon-era Korea, and even its title refers to the traditional wide-brimmed bamboo hat worn by its wandering hero. The stylized 2.5D presentation gives the swordplay a striking, ink-dark mood.

Satgat spent much of 2024 in Early Access on PC before its full release on PS5 and PC in November 2024. It is a focused, challenging action game for players who enjoy learning boss patterns and nailing counters, and a chance to see a Korean indie team bring its own history and folklore to a genre usually dominated by Western and Japanese settings.
