Item Description

Two guns, two writhing demon arms and one very long night in New York. The Darkness II, Digital Extremes' sequel to Starbreeze's cult shooter, picks up a couple of years after the first game with Jackie Estacado running the crime family that once tried to kill him, still haunted by the death of his girlfriend Jenny Romano. He has kept the Darkness locked away inside him. When rivals ambush him at a restaurant, it comes roaring back.

Quad-wielding is the signature idea, and it plays brilliantly. Each gun and each Demon Arm has its own button, so you can fire pistols or submachine guns while one arm slashes and the other grabs. Rip a car door off its hinges to use as a shield, snatch a gangster off his feet and choose from a range of gruesome executions, or eat the hearts of fallen enemies to recover health. Light is the Darkness's enemy, so shooting out the streetlights before a fight becomes second nature. Riding along is the Darkling, a foul-mouthed little imp with a Union Jack and a lot of opinions, who can be thrown into enemies and pulls his own weight in the story.

The bold, cel-shaded art style is a deliberate nod to the Top Cow comic the series comes from, and it suits the violence perfectly, keeping the gore stylized rather than grim. The story's tug-of-war between Jackie's mob life and a series of unsettling asylum sequences, where nothing is quite what it seems, gives the campaign a strange emotional pull.

The single-player campaign is compact and paced with very little filler, and the Vendettas co-op mode adds a separate story for four hitmen with their own weapons and abilities, including the katana-wielding Inugami and the hard-drinking Jimmy Wilson, with a Hit List of extra missions on the side. Few shooters of the Xbox 360's later years were this inventive, and it is a rare sequel that found its own identity instead of copying the original.
