Item Description

Glen Schofield helped bring Dead Space to life, and The Callisto Protocol is the sound of him going back to deep-space horror with a new studio, Striking Distance, built around that ambition. Three hundred years in the future, cargo pilot Jacob Lee crash-lands on Jupiter's moon Callisto and is thrown into Black Iron Prison, a maximum-security penitentiary run by the United Jupiter Company. He has barely been processed before the inmates begin twisting into something monstrous, and the rest of the game is a desperate climb out of a facility that was never designed to let anyone leave.

What makes it different is how close the violence gets. Rather than keeping enemies at a comfortable range, Callisto drags you into melee with a stun baton, and survival depends on reading each swing and steering the stick to dodge or block before answering with a combo and a quick follow-up shot. The GRP, a gravity device strapped to Jacob's wrist, lets you lift enemies and hurl them into spinning fans, spiked walls and other grisly prison machinery. Some creatures start sprouting tentacles mid-fight, a cue to shoot the growth away before the mutation completes, and ammunition is scarce enough that every bullet feels like a decision.

On Xbox Series X the presentation is the headline. Lighting, fog and grime make Black Iron's cell blocks, maintenance tunnels and frozen surface feel suffocating, and the sound design keeps you leaning toward the screen to hear what is crawling through the vents. Josh Duhamel gives Jacob a weary, grounded presence opposite Karen Fukuhara as Dani Nakamura, a resistance member whose path keeps crossing his. The death animations are notorious for their brutality, and the game wants you to dread them.

Critics were divided, praising the atmosphere and visuals while knocking the repetitive melee and a few frustrating encounters, but that tension is part of its personality: this is an unapologetically linear, old-school survival horror ride with current-generation horsepower behind it. The Day One Edition is the launch release of a game that wears its Dead Space lineage proudly, and a strong pick for horror players who want claustrophobic corridors, ugly monsters and scares built for modern hardware.
